Procedures for treating painful varicose veins and spider veins are growing in popularity.
Spider veins are tiny blood vessels no more than 2mm in diameter that may appear on the face, legs and ankles. They are bluish, purple or red and often are below the surface of the skin.
Experts agreed that they appear more frequently in women than in men. They are generally only an unattractive nuisance, although sometimes they can cause heaviness in the legs, night cramps and itching.
“Spider veins never stop increasing by lotions,” said Dr. Luis Navarro from The Vein Treatment Center,New York.
The Vein Treatment Center (VTC),was established in 1982 in the United States devoted to the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins.
“One of 25 people have varicose veins,” said Dr Steven Deitelzweig section Head of the Internal Medicine and vascular Medicine department,Ochsner Clinic Foundation in New Orleans.
Varicose veins are the ones near the surface of the skin in the legs that have become bloated and filled with blood. These veins are unsightly, bluish or purple in color and can protrude from the leg.
“Family predispositions, lack of exercise, pregnancy and obesity,” said Navarro could be the causes of its appearance.
Varicose veins may cause swelling, throbbing, heaviness; night cramps and long term complications such as ulcerations or bleeding.
Treatment for varicose veins can be painful and protracted.
“Now with the techniques we have in VTC patients can be ready to walk without pain and with no varicose veins in 45 minutes,” said Dr. Navarro.
The Medical treatments at the VTC include: sclerotherapy or injection therapy, laser therapy (two lasers on site),mini-phlebectomy,Endolaser,TIGOS (Transcather Image-Guided Occulation Sclerotherapy and ambulatory surgery.
Experts said that getting rid of spider veins is safe and easy. The standard treatment is sclerotheraphy. It involves injecting a saline solution into the veins, causing the lining of the blood vessel to die. It’s safe because a natural solution is injected.
Laser treatment is also available. In this procedure, intense light is directed to the veins to remove them permanently. Lasers are appropriate to treat spider veins that are very small and a needle cannot be used to inject the affected vein.
“There are several ways to control the condition and keep leg veins healthy and strong,” said Dr. Navarro,
· Try not to sit for long periods of time. If you do it,try to rotate and flex your ankles to increase blood circulation.
· Don't cross your legs.
· Exercise regularly.
· Avoid hormones.
· Do not consume extra salt.
· Drink a lot of water.
“Do not wear high heels, because this can cause spider veins in lower legs,” said Dr Rod Rohrich, chairman of plastic surgery at the University of Texas,Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas.
For women whose job requires standing all day, wear a compression undergarment.
“People need to do good skin care. The skin has to be moist,“ said Dr. Deitelzweig, giving more advice to help the control of varicose veins.
Following these tips can help prevent future problems with varicose veins and minimize existing ones.
Although varicose veins will not disappear on their own, doctors can either surgically remove them or inject them with a drug that shuts the damaged veins down.
