WASHINGTON – An all-American menu and decorations inspired by China’s national bird will greet guests at a state dinner being held Wednesday night in honor of China President Hu Jintao.
With a guest list of 225 U.S. and Chinese luminaries, dining tables will fill the State Dining Room and the Red and Blue rooms.
Among those on the guest list are former Presidents Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton, former U.S. secretaries of state,Barbra Streisand,Yo Yo Ma,business executives and the executive director of Human Rights Watch, which issued a report last week that criticizes China’s human rights record.
First lady Michelle Obama’s press staff hosted reporters Wednesday at a preview for the dinner, the third state dinner the Obamas have hosted. Previous dinners have honored Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Mexican President Felipe Calderon.
The last time a U.S. President hosted the Chinese President at a state dinner was in 1997 during the Clinton administration.
At the request of the Chinese delegation, the state dinner will highlight American assets through the menu, decorations and entertainment.
Katie McCormick Lelyveld,Michelle Obama’s press secretary, said Obama did not bring in a guest chef for this event. Cristeta Comerford,White House executive chef, and William Yosses,White House executive pastry chef, were cooking the dinner.
The guests will dine on d’anjou pear salad with farmstead goat cheese, poached Maine lobster, lemon sorbet, dry aged rib-eye steak with buttermilk crisp onions and old-fashioned apple pie with vanilla ice cream.
The decorations for the dinner were inspired by the pheasant, the native bird of China. The blue, red and brown linens were chosen to reflect this motif. Floral arrangements include feathers, berries and other greenery.
Table lighting includes floating candle holders with a gold pattern and glass vases with long candles. The cocktail area will be bathed in yellow,China’s national color.
Table settings will include china from four former presidents: the Clinton chargers, the Reagan and Truman dinner services and the Roosevelt crystal. Guests in the State Dining Room, which will be lit in red, will use golden flatware.
After dinner, guests will go to the East Room, which is decorated in shades of deep pink and orange.
“An Evening of Jazz,” will include Chris Botti,Dee Dee Bridgewater,Herbie Hancock,Lang Lang and Dianne Reeves.
