WASHINGTON – At this news event,CNN was first.
The Government Printing Office put the 588-page 9/11 report on sale Thursday at 11:30 a.m. – the same time as the commission released it officially at a press conference.
Minutes before the first copies of the report were sold, more than 50 people had lined the hallways. Lydia Maier,CNN intern, was first.
Maier said she had been waiting since 8 a.m. because CNN expected a long line and wanted to be first.
Although CNN led the pack, many other news organizations, including Reuters,ABC and The New York Times, followed. In fact when sales began, the line was almost entirely composed of reporters.
Veronica Meter,GPO director of public relations, said she had expected a crowd of media personnel because most of the calls she had received about the 2-pound report were from members of the media.
As a result,Barbara Campbell and her 13-year-old grandson,Kevin, stood out like sore thumbs. The Campbells, who are from New York, are vacationing in Washington.
“I think the whole experience is good for him,” said Barbara Campbell,a retired public school administrator.
Campbell said she was there to purchase one copy of the report, which was selling for $8.50 in the store, for each of them. Campbell said Kevin was excited to be there.
“He wanted to,” Campbell said. “It wasn't like I forced him.”
Kevin was the only kid waiting in line when the report went on sale, which surprised his grandmother, who thought more kids would be there “because it's vacation time.”
Both Campbells said they had been following the commission's investigation on television.
By 5 p.m.,Meter said the GPO bookstore had sold 2,168 copies of the report and 85 copies of the executive summary.
GPO provides free access to the report on the Internet at www.gpoaccess.gov/911/index.html.
