WASHINGTON – Rep. Dave Weldon,R-Fla.,on Thursday announced the creation of a bi-partisan congressional caucus to support Israel in the fight against terrorism.
The Congressional Israel Allies Caucus is a way for members of Congress to exchange ideas with members of the Knesset,Israel's parliamentary assembly, and create open lines of communication among pro-Israeli groups.
Weldon and Rep. Elliot Engel,D-N.Y.,will co-chair the caucus. They are planning to recruit 20 to 30 members.
Weldon said the idea to start a pro-Israeli caucus developed after he was approached by members of the Knesset Christian Allies Caucus,a group that works with Knesset members.
“The caucus in the Knesset drew together various parties, and I'm hoping this caucus will do the same,” Weldon said.
Weldon plans to work closely with Israel-based caucuses. His plans include exchange visits between Capitol Hill and the Knesset. The congressman hopes for the creation of a sister caucus in the Senate.
“In my district in particular,I hear from many Christians that we need to support Israel. Israel's fight against terrorism is our fight, too,” Weldon said.
Weldon said he will speak to a Knesset Christian Allies Caucus conference in Orlando in September.
