So long to the men who thought fishing could never be considered a woman’s sport. Fishing has become more popular with women and now Angling Unlimited,”Alaska’s leading saltwater and fly-fishing outfitter,” is offering the first annual “Gone Fishing Package,” exclusively for women.
Tom Ohaus, owner and operator of Angling Unlimited, said that the idea for this trip came about because it seemed that men often book the trips and women come along with them. The men often feel it necessary to dote and over-instruct the women they bring on the trips,Ohaus said. “I thought that the women fishing with each other might feel a bit more free to enjoy the trip “their way” instead of having someone else’s experience of Alaska fishing pushed on them.
The women will be staying and fishing along the Gulf of Alaska in Sitka. Here, the women will be tutored by Hubert Des Marias, executive chef of the Four Seasons Resort in Palm Beach,on “the basics of fishing, from tying knots to cutting and rigging the perfect bait.” Then, they will learn how to filet the fish, and how to prepare a “five-star dinner.” The fish that the women will catch on the trip will be “frozen and vacuum-sealed,” for the preparation of the Alaskan meal in their homes.
Not only will the women get to enjoy fishing and preparing meals, they will also get a chance to view the humpback whales, eagles, sea otters, sea lions, and seals.
Ohaus said that even though no one has signed up for this trip yet,he still plans to offer a second trip for women in 2004. Ohaus said his regular customers range between the ages of 20 and 80.
Ohaus is one of six captains of Angling Unlimited. Angling Unlimited has been up and running since 1987. Ohaus said that the women will be fishing on boats 28-feet by 9-feet- wide, that are devoted to fishing, but are comfortable for a day on the water, and will have a modest cabin that provides heated comfort when traveling. It also has an enclosed head (toilet) for privacy.
This fishing trip will take place July 10 -13,2003,but women who are interested in this trip should respond no later than June 13,2003. The Women “Gone Fishing Package” is $1,295 per person (based on double occupancy),which includes a four-day,five-night stay at the Sitka Waterfront Suites, four days of fishing with experienced, licensed captain and crew (with an option to replace one day of fishing with an eco-tour),daily breakfast and lunch, seafood cooking tutorials and three dinners with the help of Des Marias, bait, tackle, weather gear with the highest quality fish processing,Alaska fishing licenses, airport travel, transportation between lodging and boat, and complimentary rental car for groups of four or more.
Ohaus said the women should bring around $150 dollars extra for the Chinook Stamp,Sitka sales tax,and dinner for the non-cooking night. Airfare to Alaska is not included in the package.
