Sarah Lutz
Sarah LutzRaised in a family of journalists, I've been asking everyone questions since I could talk.
In high school I knew drumming would lead me to fame and fortune. But soon into my freshman year of college at the University of Texas at Arlington, my love of writing and thirst for knowledge led me to the student newspaper. At The Shorthorn, I dived in head first, writing four stories in my first week, and never looked back. I cultivated a love of all things journalism, from the race against the deadline to the search for the unique source, the best angle and the perfect word.
My coverage included everything from the police to administration and from architecture to technology, but my favorite beat was the university's sustainability efforts. If I didn't know before, I decided by the end of that semester that I wanted to be reporter.
That semester I covered everything from "trayless" dining in the student dining halls to updates on the university's new gas well. But the most excitement came from the university's plans to build a new parking lot. I followed the story's development as student environmentalists became outraged, along with community members who also had not had a voice in the university's decision to add a gas well a few years earlier.
As the debate raged, suddenly finding a student to interview for my story who knew what I was talking about became easy. Eventually, the university decided not to build the now- infamous Lot 49. I knew then that I wanted to write more than stories: I wanted to right wrongs.
