Bernard McGhee - Fall 1999

I’m a senior at Xavier University of Louisiana where I major in mass communications. In my freshman year,
I began my career as a journalist. I first made my mark as a sports co-editor for the Xavier Herald before
realizing that I could tick off more people as an editorial writer and by my junior year I was editor-in-chief.

I was also in the Dow Jones Business Writing Internship in the summer of 1998. Then I worked at the
Huntsville Times in Alabama. More recently, I was an intern at the Times Picayune in New Orleans where I
covered everything from dog decapitations to bombers returning from Kosovo.

I think it was in New Orleans that I really got turned on to journalism. At the risk of sounding morbid, I
liked rushing out to the scene of an accident or a shooting. It was then that I realized just how exciting the
life of a journalist can be because one never knows what they’ll be doing that day when they walk into the
newsroom and I think that’s pretty fab.
