Senate committee debates date for Roberts' hearing

WASHINGTON – Senators continued to debate Wednesday whether late August or early September would be the best time to begin Judge John Roberts' Supreme Court confirmation hearing.

Republicans want to begin hearings on Aug. 29 to ensure confirmation by the beginning of the Supreme Court session in October, said Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Arlen Specter, R-Pa.

But the committee's senior Democrat, Sen. Patrick Leahy of Vermont, said the beginning date doesn't matter. He said there's no doubt that a final vote will occur before the court convenes Oct. 3.
