News media scramble to purchase copies of 9/11 report

WASHINGTON - At this news event, CNN was first.

The Government Printing Office put the 588-page 9/11 report on sale Thursday at 11:30 a.m. – the same time as the commission released it officially at a press conference.

Minutes before the first copies of the report were sold, more than 50 people had lined the hallways. Lydia Maier, CNN intern, was first.

Maier said she had been waiting since 8 a.m. because CNN expected a long line and wanted to be first.

Although CNN led the pack, many other news organizations, including Reuters, ABC and The New York Times, followed. In fact when sales began, the line was almost entirely composed of reporters.
