For tourists, report of gunshots made for an unusual visit

WASHINGTON - Hugh and Lois Hoff brought their two granddaughters, Haylie and Catherine, to see their nation's capital.

They were on their way to visit their congressman when U.S. Capitol Police began running down the street. They could tell their first day of vacation was not going to be an average one.

“None of this ever happens in Seattle,” Haylie, 12, said.

Reports of possible gunshots caused an array of law enforcement officials to descend on the Rayburn House Office Building.

Authorities received a phone call about 10:30 a.m. that gunshots had been heard in the building's garage. Authorities searched the enormous building floor by floor. After more than four hours, they cleared the building.
