Family spelling tradition ends at Round 2 for Wash. speller

WASHINGTON - Daniel Hageman fell short in his quest to win the 2006 Scripps National Spelling Bee Wednesday.

But that wasn't enough. The home-schooled 14-year-old from Port Orchard, Wash., answered 15 out of 25 questions right on the Round 1 written test. He got a point for each of those words and 3 for the oral round, but competitors needed 21 points to advance to Round 3.
