Chertoff: U.S. needs to attract more tourists, business visitors

WASHINGTON – Government officials and international travel industry leaders gathered at the Global Travel and Tourism summit Tuesday, trying to reconcile the industry's desire to boost business with the need for security.

Although the forum had a global message, the presence of U.S. government officials and the conference's first U.S. meeting shifted the focus to the states. The U.S. travel and tourism industry suffered after Sept. 11.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff told an audience that included 225 conference delegates that part of the strategy for making the world safer is bringing visitors to the United States.
