WASHINGTON - About 800 immigrant workers and their allies will set out on the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride across the United States from Sept. 20 to Oct. 4 as part of a campaign to liberalize immigration laws.
At a news conference Tuesday, Maria Elena Durazo, national chair of the Immigrant Workers Freedom Ride, said the ride will focus public attention on immigrant rights and the flaws of the current immigration policies.
Immigrants “deserve and want to come out of the shadows,” Durazo said.
The group's manifesto states that immigrants “will educate the public and elected officials about three key requirements of a new immigration policy: legalization and a road to citizenship for all immigrants and workers in this country, the right of immigrant workers to reunite their families, protecting the rights of immigrants at work and the civil liberties of all.”
