Editors & Professors
Editors…
Do you need a story written for your newspaper?SHFWire students can cover breaking news or a scheduled news event as well as write longer feature stories. We ask only that you give the reporting interns a byline and that you credit the Scripps Howard Foundation Wire. Students write news, sports, business, health, home and garden, personal technology, travel and food.
Whatever your needs, e-mail your assignment requests to Jody Beck, program director, at beckj@shns.com.
Professors…
Can my student do an independent study?
Absolutely. We work with the students and help them find sources to talk to and discuss their writing for this project.
Who supervises this internship?
Director Jody Beck, a journalist with more than 25 years of experience, works with the students to develop their story ideas, contact sources and notify editors who might be interested in running their stories. She does one-on-one editing, rewriting and follow-up story conferences.
Six students, including one international student, are available to write assignments during the three Semester in Washington sessions.
Who uses the SHFWire?
Foundation Wire stories appear in major daily newspapers across the United States including the Scripps Howard newspapers as well as non-Scripps papers like the Winston-Salem Journal, the Chicago Sun Times, the Detroit News and hundreds more. When Foundation stories go out on the national Scripps Howard News Service wire, more than 400 clients receive the story.
